Much like the weather in the UK, the most popular nail trend can switch in what feels like a matter of moments. In the last week alone, Vogue has covered Bambi nails, pick-and-mix manis, and the rise of tomato-red polish. But one enduring trend holds fast as a firm celeb favourite, no matter the forecast: gloriously glossy soap nails.

The universally flattering shade creates the perfect “your-nails-but-better” effect – plus, it’s uber versatile. “Celebrities are constantly photographed in different outfits, campaigns and at events, so a clean, sheer manicure works with everything,” as manicurist Michelle Class previously told British Vogue.

That’s likely because it has the effect of making the hands and fingers look long and elegant, Giorgia Cappella, head of product and education at The GelBottle, explained. “Oval and almond [nail shapes] are the most flattering on almost everyone because they taper, which makes fingers look longer and slimmer. Almond is the slightly sharper, more elegant version, which is why it’s great for the red carpet.”
Above all, the key to getting the minimalist trend right lies in diligent prep and a glassy finish. That means paying special attention to an even nail shape and to seal the polish with a high-shine top coat.
