Bank of Canada surveys show rising inflation expectations, potential rate hike

The Bank of Canada’s latest surveys indicate that both firms and consumers expect higher inflation, with businesses planning to transfer increased input costs to customers. These findings, reported by Bloomberg Markets, suggest that inflationary pressures may persist above the Bank’s 2% target, influencing the central bank’s monetary policy decisions. The October data reflects a shift in business strategies to mitigate cost pressures by passing them onto consumers, raising concerns about sustained inflation levels.

Key Takeaways

• The Bank of Canada’s surveys suggest inflation expectations are rising among firms and households.
• Markets appear to interpret these expectations as supportive of a potential rate increase by the central bank.
• Current pricing in prediction markets indicates a significant shift towards a 50+ bps rate hike scenario.

What to Watch

Watch for upcoming statements from Bank of Canada officials, particularly Governor Tiff Macklem, for indications of a possible rate adjustment. The October interest rate announcement will be a focal point, as any shift in the overnight rate could align with the recent inflation expectations. Key economic indicators, such as employment data and oil prices, may further influence the central bank’s decision-making process in the coming days.
