Guwahati, Oct 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday accused Rahul Gandhi and the Congress of attacking the foundations of India’s democracy, alleging that the party questions electoral outcomes when it loses but accepts them when it wins.
In a post on X, Sarma also accused Gandhi of attempting to exert political pressure on the judiciary and announced peaceful mass rallies by the BJP across Assam from October 13 to 31.
“Rahul Gandhi and his Congress party are mounting an attack on the very foundations of India’s vibrant democracy. Their double standard is plain to see. When Shri @narendramodi Ji is elected Prime Minister, Rahul Gandhi calls it manipulation, yet his own election to Parliament and his subsequent elevation as Leader of the Opposition is beyond question,” Sarma said.
He further alleged that the Congress applies different standards to electoral outcomes in Assam and Kerala.
“When Assam votes, the result is unacceptable, when Kerala votes, it is welcomed. Democracy, for the Congress, is valid only when it delivers victory for the Congress,” the chief minister wrote.
Sarma also criticised Gandhi over his reported move to approach the Supreme Court, alleging that it amounted to an attempt to pressure the judiciary after the Chief Justice of India declined a meeting.
“Constitutional institutions cannot be made answerable to a party’s electoral frustrations,” he said.
Announcing the BJP’s planned campaign, Sarma said the party would organise peaceful mass rallies at district headquarters across Assam from October 13 through October 31.
According to the chief minister, the rallies would highlight what he described as the Congress’s attempts to “blackmail our constitutional institutions”, protect illegal infiltrators by opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, and undermine the democratic mandate.
Sarma said the campaign would also reaffirm the BJP’s support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his vision of a developed India by 2047.
“The people’s mandate deserves respect. Our institutions deserve independence. Neither can be held hostage to political convenience,” he added.
The announcement comes amid a political confrontation between the BJP and Congress over electoral processes, the revision of voter lists and the role of constitutional institutions. Sarma’s remarks reflect the Assam BJP’s position on the dispute.
