The search was carried out by federal authorities, CNN and other outlets reported.
“This operation is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation,” a spokesperson for the US Department of Justice said, according to the television channel.
Early Monday evening, Ilhan Omar hit back in a post on X, writing that she “will not be silenced” and adding:
“Make no mistake: This is an attempt to target political enemies and use federal law enforcement as a weapon. For ten years, Trump has been making baseless accusations in an attempt to smear me. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political scare tactics.”
It is still unclear what type of crime is being investigated, but representatives of the Trump administration have previously indicated that Omar, who is running for re-election in the upcoming midterm elections, is under investigation.
In September, President Donald Trump’s border chief, Tom Homan, said that “things are going on” regarding Omar.
On Monday, Homan confirmed that a search had taken place.
“As for details, I can refer you to Todd Blanche (the attorney general) or Markwayne Mullin (the secretary of homeland security),” he told Fox News.
Ilhan Omar has been verbally attacked by Trump several times, not least in his remarks about Somalis in her home state of Minnesota in December last year. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2018 after arriving in the United States as a teenager, having fled Somalia as a refugee.
