Nico Williams Agent Reveals Why Liverpool Missed Out on Athletic Club Star
Liverpool’s interest in Nico Williams during the summer of 2024 was well documented, but fresh comments from the Spanish winger’s agent have provided a fascinating insight into why a move to Anfield never materialised.
The Athletic Club forward was one of European football’s most sought-after players following his outstanding performances at Euro 2024. Liverpool were among several elite clubs pursuing his signature, although convincing Williams to leave Bilbao proved considerably more complicated than anticipated.
Liverpool Faced Fierce Competition for Nico Williams
Williams entered the summer of 2024 with his reputation soaring. Having helped Athletic Club secure the Copa del Rey, he went on to play a decisive role in Spain’s European Championship triumph, scoring against England in the final.
His explosive pace, direct running and ability to operate across the attacking positions made him an attractive proposition for Liverpool, who were preparing for their first season under Arne Slot.
However, Liverpool faced competition from Barcelona, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.
Speaking to Spanish outlet Los Fulanos, Williams’ agent Felix Tainta has now revealed the extraordinary level of interest in his client.
“Barcelona, Arsenal, Bayern, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain… I could name them all. Everyone wanted Nico, and having a player say no to all these clubs isn’t easy,” he said.
That admission raises an interesting question about how much influence a player’s personal circumstances can have on even the most ambitious transfer negotiations.

Playing Time Proved Crucial to Williams Decision
According to Tainta, guarantees over playing opportunities were central to Williams’ thinking.
“We decided that if there weren’t certain guarantees, we couldn’t risk Nico not going there to play, with a World Cup coming up, and not just with a World Cup. A professional has to practice their profession,” he added.
There is considerable logic behind that position.
For a young international approaching his prime, consistent football offers an opportunity to develop, maintain momentum and strengthen his position within the national team.
Liverpool already possessed significant attacking quality in 2024, meaning Williams would have faced considerable competition for minutes.
Whether Liverpool were unwilling to provide specific assurances remains unclear. Tainta’s comments describe the broader decision-making process without identifying precisely what each interested club offered.
That distinction matters when assessing Liverpool’s recruitment strategy.
Athletic Club Commitment Reflects Williams Priorities
Williams ultimately remained with Athletic Club, strengthening his connection with a club where he had developed into one of Spain’s most exciting attacking talents.
His subsequent decision to sign a remarkable ten-year contract extension, keeping him at Bilbao until 2035, demonstrated the strength of that commitment.
For Athletic Club, retaining a player coveted by Europe’s wealthiest clubs represented a significant achievement.
For Liverpool, the episode illustrates the challenges involved in recruiting established international talents who already enjoy considerable status and security at their existing clubs.
The financial package, sporting project and prospect of silverware all matter, but so does the player’s assessment of his immediate career prospects.
Liverpool Transfer Lesson Remains Relevant Under Iraola
With Andoni Iraola now overseeing Liverpool’s next chapter, Williams’ situation offers a useful reminder about recruitment.
Elite attacking players naturally attract interest from multiple clubs, and negotiations frequently depend on factors beyond transfer fees and wages.
Williams clearly valued regular football and his established position at Athletic Club.
Liverpool’s interest was genuine enough to feature among the clubs named by his representative, but the winger ultimately chose continuity.
Given his long-term contract, any future Liverpool pursuit would present substantial complications.
For now, Tainta’s revelations provide a clearer understanding of why one of European football’s most coveted wingers remained in Bilbao despite Liverpool’s interest.
