Amazon plans to put more than €16 billion (approximately $18 billion) to work in Germany during 2027. That is a lot of money for one country in one year, even by Amazon standards.
The commitment was unveiled at the Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin on October 20, 2026. It covers data centers, satellite broadband, logistics and television. Amazon is effectively spending across almost every business it runs at once.
Where the €16 billion goes
The largest named slice goes to the cloud. Approximately €4.8 billion is earmarked for expanding the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) cloud region and building out AI capabilities.
Amazon will open a second robotics and AI research lab in Berlin as part of the package.
On the ground, the company plans to create over 3,000 new logistics jobs. Those roles support the warehouses and delivery networks that still make up the physical backbone of the business.
Then there is space. Amazon intends to conduct 24 rocket launches for its Leo satellite constellation, the broadband network it is building to compete with services like Starlink.
Finally, Prime Video gets its share. The plan includes more than 15 new German productions scheduled through the end of 2027.
A familiar pattern of spending
This is not Amazon’s first big check to Germany. The company has invested more than €100 billion in the country since 2010.
The pace has been picking up. Amazon spent €15 billion in Germany in 2025 alone, so the 2027 figure of over €16 billion represents a step up from that recent benchmark.
The company also made a prior commitment in June 2024, pledging €10 billion toward German cloud and logistics infrastructure. The new package goes considerably further, adding satellites, research labs and entertainment to the mix.
The announcement also fits inside a larger national effort. Amazon’s pledge aligns with the “Made for Germany” initiative, under which participating corporations collectively pledged €800 billion through 2028.
What this means
For Germany, the headline benefit is concrete: jobs, infrastructure and a deeper AI footprint.
For Amazon, the cloud spending is the strategic centerpiece. Demand for AI computing power keeps climbing, and companies building or running AI models need data centers close to their customers. Expanding Frankfurt positions AWS to capture more of that European demand, particularly from businesses that prefer their data to stay on the continent.
The research summarized for this story frames the move as a signal of confidence in European cloud and AI markets. It suggests the expansion could lift Amazon’s market share in those sectors and may influence how investors value the stock.
The key things to track are execution and timing. Watch whether the Frankfurt expansion comes online on schedule, how quickly the 3,000 logistics roles materialize, and whether Leo hits its 24-launch cadence.
