Few debates in soccer burn as hot as Ronaldo versus Messi. Fans argue about it at games, in group chats, and over dinner. Nobody ever seems to change a mind, even after hours of talk.
Every single award, stat, or highlight reel gives both sides new ammunition. Supporters of each star keep their own private scoreboards. Now, a fresh contest promises another round of the sport’s oldest argument.
Why Ronaldo’s early lead has fans talking
France Football just launched a brand new fan vote to crown the Ballon d’Or of All Time. Cristiano Ronaldo is currently out front. The official Ballon d’Or channels confirmed his big early lead this week.
Stories about these two superstars always travel very fast. A Ronaldo lead over Messi is bound to spark fierce opinions among fans. People naturally want to know whether the result truly means anything at all.
For Ronaldo’s many admirers, the lead feels like long-overdue recognition. For Messi’s loyal admirers, it feels like only a temporary blip right now. Either way, the poll has made both rival camps pay very close attention.
What is the Ballon d’Or of all time?
France Football created the Ballon d’Or in 1956, and 2026 marks the award’s 70th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, the official Ballon d’Or platform launched a special fan poll called the Ballon d’Or Of All Time, or B.O.A.T.
Fans are not simply choosing their favorite player overall. Every Ballon d’Or-winning year belonging to a player who has won the award at least twice appears as a separate voting option, allowing supporters to choose a specific winning year.
Voting closes October 27 at 11:59 p.m. Paris time on the official Ballon d’Or platform. Fans can vote as many times as they like, including repeatedly for the same entry, with each vote requiring a separate €1 contribution.
How the fan vote really works
Each B.O.A.T. vote requires a €1 contribution on the official Ballon d’Or website. In return, fans receive a downloadable Ballon d’Or photo and access to community benefits, including the ability to cast a vote.
This is a paid public fan vote, not the traditional jury process used to decide the annual Ballon d’Or. Supporters can vote as many times as they like, but every additional vote requires another €1 contribution.
That means the standings measure participation in this particular fan poll rather than providing an official verdict on the greatest player or Ballon d’Or winner in history. The B.O.A.T. is a separate digital fan initiative and is not an official trophy presented at the ceremony.
Ronaldo’s 2008 season steals the spotlight
Ronaldo’s 2008 Ballon d’Or-winning year is leading the B.O.A.T. poll. In the latest official standings published October 20, his entry held 75% of the vote. During Manchester United’s 2007-08 season, Ronaldo scored 42 goals in all competitions and helped the club win both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.
Ronaldo was 23 when he won his first Ballon d’Or in 2008 after a remarkable season. His 31 Premier League goals also earned him the European Golden Shoe, while he finished as the Champions League’s leading scorer with 8 goals.
His commanding position in the fan poll remains provisional. Because supporters can submit unlimited votes and each entry requires a separate €1 contribution, the standings can continue changing until voting closes October 27.
Why Messi’s 8 trophies split the vote
Messi has won the Ballon d’Or a record 8 times, and each of those winning years appears as a separate entry in the B.O.A.T. poll. That means votes for Messi can be distributed across several different options rather than concentrated in a single entry.
The latest official standings published October 20 had Messi’s 2012 Ballon d’Or in second place with 9%. Ronaldo’s 2017 entry was third with 6%, meaning Messi’s 2023 Ballon d’Or was no longer third in the latest organizer-reported update.
Messi supporters could still rally behind one of his winning years before voting closes. However, the standings remain provisional, and every additional vote requires a separate €1 contribution.
Messi’s record year sits in second place
Messi’s 2012 Ballon d’Or remains second in the B.O.A.T. poll. In the latest official standings published October 20, it held 9% of the vote. Messi scored a record 91 goals for Barcelona and Argentina during the 2012 calendar year, a total that has not been surpassed since.
The 2012 honor was Messi’s fourth consecutive Ballon d’Or, following his wins in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Cristiano Ronaldo finished second to Messi in the 2009, 2011 and 2012 Ballon d’Or voting.
Goals alone do not determine this fan poll. Supporters are free to judge each Ballon d’Or-winning year however they choose, including individual statistics, trophies and memorable performances.
Little-known fact: At 38, Messi became the oldest player to score a World Cup hat trick when Argentina beat Algeria 3-0 at the 2026 World Cup. The match was his 200th senior international appearance, and the tournament made him the first men’s player to appear at six World Cups.
Who else made the all-time ballot
Ten players made the ballot because each one won the Ballon d’Or at least twice. Besides Ronaldo and Messi, that list includes Ronaldo Nazário, Marco van Basten and Michel Platini. Johan Cruyff is there too.
The older generation brings serious history and star power to the ballot. Franz Beckenbauer, Kevin Keegan and Rummenigge also appear alongside them. So does Alfredo Di Stéfano, one of the first stars of the award.
Some famous names are missing from the list. Only multiple winners made the cut, so players with just one award had no chance. That rule keeps the ballot short but also leaves out some legends.
When will the winner finally be revealed?
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony takes place Monday, October 26, at the London Palladium in London. Organizers selected the British capital as a tribute to England’s Stanley Matthews, who became the first Ballon d’Or winner in 1956.
The separate B.O.A.T. fan vote remains open until October 27 at 11:59 p.m. Paris time. The official Ballon d’Or website says the final results will be announced October 28 on ballondor.com and the organization’s social media channels.
Ronaldo’s 2008 entry currently holds a commanding lead in the latest published standings, but voting remains open and the totals can still change. Whatever the final result, the poll has added another chapter to the long-running Ronaldo-Messi debate.
