U.S. Urges Consumers to Stop Using Power Quick Pot Pressure Cookers Due to Severe Burn Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a formal warning on October 15, advising consumers to immediately discontinue the use of the six-quart Power Quick Pot electric pressure cookers, model Y6D-36, due to a significant risk of severe burns.

The federal agency has recorded 24 incidents where the cooker’s lid opened unexpectedly while under pressure, releasing steam, hot liquids, and boiling food onto users.

This warning applies to approximately 393,000 units manufactured in China and imported by Tristar Products, Inc., based in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

According to the CPSC, "the pressure cooker lid can be opened while the unit is pressurized, causing the hot contents to be ejected without warning."

The agency is firm in its directive: "We urge consumers to stop using these pressure cookers immediately and dispose of them. Do not sell or donate these hazardous products."

The agency also highlights that Tristar Products refused to recall the product or offer any remedy to consumers.

As a result, this action serves as a safety warning—not a voluntary recall—and there is no refund, repair, or replacement program available for owners of the appliance.

The affected cookers were sold on Walmart.com, Amazon.com, eBay.com, and other retailers nationwide between July 2018 and November 2023, with prices ranging from $44 to $160, suggesting many units may still be in use in Cuban and Latino households across the United States.

Among Cuban residents in the U.S., these types of cookers are especially popular due to the nature of traditional Cuban cuisine, which often requires prolonged cooking times to soften beans and cook meats.

These appliances allow for significantly reduced cooking times and ease the preparation of numerous traditional Cuban dishes.

To identify the model in question, look for a stainless steel body, black pressure lid, button controls, and a digital display for temperature and functions. The "Power Quick Pot" brand is printed on the front of the appliance, and the model number Y6D-36 can be found on a label at the back.

The company had previously faced civil lawsuits over the same defect prior to this warning. In one case, a user suffered second and third-degree burns to her face, chest, and arms when the lid of her Power Quick Pot Y6D-36 was ejected during normal use.

This is not the first instance where the CPSC has intervened with everyday products posing risks to families. Recently, the agency also ordered the recall of swing seats sold on Amazon and issued alerts about fire hazards in household batteries.

Individuals who have experienced injuries or detected defects with the product can report it at SaferProducts.gov or call 800-638-2772, with Spanish assistance available Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
