The start of the 2026/27 season has taught the Anfield faithful one thing, this Liverpool team is far from complete.
There have been plenty of positives to take away from the early days of Andoni Iraola's reign in the dugout, most notably the impressive performances of Jeremy Jacquet who looks like a natural in Liverpool's defence.
Alexander Isak also looks much closer to the striker the Reds spent £125 million to sign, with Bradley Barcola beginning to settle into to Iraola's side too.
Liverpool's side still lacks balance however, and it will likely take a few more signings for Iraola to properly implement his system, but the Reds are making a massive mistake not chasing a player who would be perfect for them.
Liverpool missing out on perfect target
Brighton have been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season, with Fabian Hurzeler's side looking genuinely ready to cement themselves as a top-four side this campaign.
Excellent team performances have been key in the Seagulls' early season success, but there have been some notable individual performers too.
Diego Gomez is one of the most spoken about, especially following his spectacular goal from the half-way line against Crystal Palace, and the Paraguayan is the epitome of Hurzeler's system in Sussex.
The latest report on Gomez's future doesn't include Liverpool as a potential suitor, however.
According to Hooligan Soccer, Manchester United are the 'sole serious and determined candidate' to sign Gomez in January, with Arsenal and Atletico Madrid also monitoring the 23-year-old.
Gomez's high-energy, athletic style would suit Iraola's pressing system perfectly, and the former Inter Miami man's ability to contribute to both the attack and the defence would be a massive boost for the Reds.
A fee of around €50-60 million (~£40-50m) would reportedly be enough to secure the Paraguayan’s services in the January window, and at that price it feels silly for Liverpool to not be in the chase.
As well as being versatile in his playstyle, Gomez can cover multiple positions and could be a vital utility player as the Reds look to return to the very top of English football.
Julian Ward will be well aware of the 23-year-old's qualities and should seriously consider making a move in the January window.
