Tell us about your institution and its role within Germany’s higher education landscape.
While the GLS campus is home to a language school, we really serve as a vital launchpad into German higher education. Students live and learn on our historic green campus in Berlin, getting a true campus lifestyle right away. On top of that, we run tailored pathway programs that prepare international students linguistically for German universities. Plus, as an official testing center for TestDaF and telc, they can take the exact language exams they need for university admission right here on campus.
What makes Germany such an attractive destination for international students?
First and foremost, Germany offers world-class education—mostly tuition-free at public universities. But beyond the academics, it’s really the complete package that draws students in: you can work part-time while studying, stay for up to 18 months after graduation to start your career, and enjoy a fantastic quality of life right in the heart of Europe.
How do you see the German higher education sector evolving over the next five years?
Over the next five years, German higher education will double down on solving the country’s skilled labor shortage. I expect that we’ll see a boom in dual study programs combining academia and professional work.
Are there particular markets or student segments you’re looking to grow in the near future?
Segment-wise, we’re heavily focused on young professionals and university-bound international students – especially those looking for pathway programs into German universities or dual study tracks that lead straight into the German labor market.
Outside of work, what’s one thing a visitor to Germany shouldn’t miss?
I’d have to say the Pergamon Museum on Berlin’s Museum Island. What’s fascinating is that its architect, Ludwig Hoffmann, also built this very hall where we’re holding The PIE Live Germany – which was originally constructed as a grand, palatial public bathhouse during Berlin’s boom era!
What attracted you to take part in The PIE Live Germany?
We’re actually hosting the event this year, which is a huge honor for us. What attracted us most is the opportunity to welcome the global education community to our campus and take part in truly inspiring, forward-looking discussions.
Which sessions on the agenda are you most looking forward to attending, and why?
Definitely Amy Baker’s opening keynote to kick things off. Beyond that, I’m most looking forward to the sessions focused on AI and its growing impact on the international education sector.
Look out for…
If you had to sum up your approach to international education in three words, what would they be?
Immersion, connection, opportunity.
What’s a typical day like for you at your institution?
I like to start by catching up with whichever team members are around – there are 170 of us in total! –then retreating to my office for strategic focus.
Where will we find you at The PIE Live Germany?
Everywhere! I’ll definitely be working the room, connecting with guests, and making sure everyone feels welcome on our campus.
