MGM Healthcare Malar, Adyar, launched ‘Metabolic Clinic’ on Thursday.
The clinic will offer a multi-specialty programme for obesity and metabolic disorders. It will provide individualised, evidence-based treatments for excess weight management, of associated medical complications, and support for remission of several metabolic conditions. It will also address associated conditions such as prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and lipid abnormalities, including elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Maduravoyal MLA Rhevanth Charan P. launched the clinic. Meherprasad Y.D., senior consultant endocrinologist, who is leading the programme, said metabolic problems such as excess weight, high blood sugar, abnormal cholesterol levels, and conditions such as PCOS had become increasingly common, affecting adults, children, and young adults.
It was important to identify them early and start treatment as these conditions can increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and kidney disease over time, he said, adding that an integrated approach would enable the development of individualised treatment plans, which address multiple health challenges associated with obesity, promote sustainable weight management, and support the remission of eligible metabolic conditions.
The programme will be supported by specialists Manohar G. (cardiology), Ammaiyappan Palaniswamy C. (pulmonology), and Kavitha Sampathkumar (hepatology), along with dietitians and physiotherapists. Kalpana Thai B., the hospital’s medical superintendent was present, a press release added.
