October the 13th, 2026 – A new air quality monitoring station has been installed at the shameful Gospić waste site which will assess the potential harmful impacts on the environment above the soil itself.
A measuring station has been installed at the location of PPK Velebit in Gospić, where the scandalous illegally disposed waste is currently located. Index reports that the new station will monitor concentrations of particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10 as well as the presence of metals in the air. Lika-Senj County has revealed that measurements will be carried out during the remediation in order to monitor the state of air quality and the possible impact of the entire situation there on the environment.
The station was installed at the request of the administration in Gospić by experts from the Teaching Institute for Public Health of Split-Dalmatia County. Also involved in the project are Lika-Senj County and the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, which are expected to continue financing air-quality monitoring in the Gospić area.
the station will measure pm2.5 and pm10 levels
The station will measure particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10, and the presence of metals will also be analysed in the collected samples. Two sedimentators have also been installed for collecting total deposited matter, in which the presence of heavy metals will likewise be determined. One sedimentator has been placed next to the measuring station and the other in a nearby settlement. The Institute states that wind directions were taken into account when selecting the sampling sites so that any possible spread of dust and particles can be monitored. Measurements and analyses should be carried out in accordance with regulations on air protection and quality. The County states that the goal is to provide citizens with expert data on the state of the air at a time of increased concern due to the waste at the PPK Velebit location.
the measuring station will remain in place throughout the duration of the large-scale clean up
Deputy Director of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund Mirko Budiša said that air-quality monitoring is part of the process of remediating the illegal landfill. According to him, the station should remain at the location throughout the entire remediation so that its possible impact on the environment and people’s health can be monitored. County Prefect of Lika-Senj County Ernest Petry said that the devices were installed at the invitation of the City of Gospić for an initial period of one month. He announced that the County, in cooperation with the Fund, will ensure the continuation of measurements over the next year, and longer if necessary. Petry stated that the County, the City of Gospić, the Fund and the competent ministries are participating in the monitoring. He highlighted as the goal of the cooperation the enabling of reliable monitoring of air-quality data in the area where waste has been illegally disposed.
daily data
Deputy Mayor of Gospić Ivica Kovačević said that this is a reference measuring station installed by a team from the Teaching Institute for Public Health of Split-Dalmatia County, led by Nenad Periš. He announced daily air-quality monitoring and the availability of relevant data to citizens on an almost daily basis. The measurement results should show the concentrations of particulate matter and metals at the location and serve for monitoring the situation during the remediation of the illegally disposed waste.
