Ten people have been arrested, and a police officer sustained a serious facial injury during the policing operation for Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.
According to ESPN, the arrests followed a heated encounter marked by hostility towards Manchester City over their guilty verdict in a case involving alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules, which the club has appealed.
Merseyside Police said the arrests included one man suspected of assaulting a police officer on two counts, five people suspected of tragedy chanting, one suspected of being drunk and disorderly and assault, two suspected of affray, and one suspected of throwing objects onto the pitch.
The injured officer was hurt at about 6.35 pm as supporters left the stadium, during the arrest of a man on Anfield Road. The officer was taken to hospital for treatment and is recovering at home.
Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin condemned tragedy chanting, saying it caused severe distress to the families and loved ones of victims and had no place in football.
She added that police would continue working with clubs to identify offenders and bring them to justice, warning that those involved risked arrest and a criminal record.
Manchester City defeated Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday, extending their perfect start to the Premier League season to six consecutive victories.
The match was goalless at half-time, but Liverpool were reduced to 10 men after Ryan Gravenberch received a second yellow card in the 62nd minute. Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the 65th minute before Jeremy Doku doubled City’s lead three minutes later and Rayan Cherki completed the victory in the 78th minute.
The encounter was played amid a hostile atmosphere, with Liverpool supporters jeering City players and displaying banners protesting the club’s financial breaches verdict.
