Ghana’s under-17 football team, the Black Starlets, have failed to qualify for the 2027 TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a painful 1-0 defeat to rivals Côte d’Ivoire.
The semi-final clash, played at the ongoing WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship, saw Kassim Ocansey Mingle’s side fall just short of their primary objective despite putting up a spirited performance.
The decisive moment of the match arrived when the Ivorians capitalised on their opportunities to break the deadlock. Ghana’s uphill task became even steeper after being reduced to 10 men, forcing the Starlets to play a significant portion of the game at a numerical disadvantage.
Despite the setback, Mingle’s boys fought valiantly, creating several half-chances in search of an equalizer. However, the resilient Ivorian defense held firm to book their place in the final and secure one of the coveted AFCON tickets.
The result means Ghana’s long wait to return to the continental youth showpiece continues, dealing a heavy blow to the team’s extensive nationwide talent scouting and preparation efforts.
Following this exit, the technical team led by Coach Kassim Mingle will turn their attention to regrouping the squad, as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) evaluates its long-term development plans for the country’s youth tiers.
