OSAN — The city of Osan resumed work on the Osan Stream section of a road project crossing the Gyeongbu railway line on the 16th, after a flood-season construction ban expired the previous day. The road will link Won-dong and Nueup-dong.
According to the city, work on the Osan Stream section is barred each year from May 15 to Oct. 15 under the terms of a river occupancy permit issued by the Han River Basin Environmental Office. The restriction is intended to keep the stream flowing freely and to protect public safety. During the ban, the city pressed ahead with other sections of the project.
The project will build a new road connecting National Route 1 in Won-dong with Nueup-dong. It will run 1.54 kilometers with four to six lanes in both directions. The road is part of a wider transport improvement plan for the Osan Segyo 2 district, at a total cost of 133.9 billion won.
Once completed, the road is expected to disperse traffic now concentrated on Nambu-daero and Seongho-daero. The city also expects smoother traffic between the Segyo 2 district and the older downtown area.
Ahead of the restart, the city reviewed site conditions and the construction schedule and completed consultations with relevant agencies. It plans to monitor safety in the stream and track progress regularly as the remaining work proceeds.
A temporary access road will also be built for construction of the Osan Stream bridge. As a result, parts of the pedestrian walkway and bike path will be closed from the wooden bridge in front of LG Chem to the stepping stones in front of the environmental works office. The city will put up banners and safety barriers to direct pedestrians to a temporary walkway.
Work on the bridge abutments and the relocation of underground utilities is scheduled from the 26th through Nov. 6. During that period, part of Osancheon-ro will be temporarily rerouted and sidewalk widths will be narrowed.
"We will do our utmost to provide clear guidance and manage safety so that residents can travel without risk," Osan Mayor Cho Yong-ho said. "We will also focus on schedule management so that this east-west road is completed on time."
