Secaucus, N.J.-based Quest Diagnostics is investigating a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to a system used by certain clients to order laboratory tests and retrieve results.
The company learned of the incident Oct. 21 and believes an unauthorized party accessed certain patient records, according to an Oct. 22 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The incident involved Quest’s Quanum Lab Services Manager system, which allows certain clients to place test orders, receive results and look up previous results.
Quest said it activated its cybersecurity incident response procedures to contain the activity, investigate the incident and implement remedial measures.
The company has notified federal law enforcement and engaged outside cybersecurity experts to assist with the investigation.
Quest said the incident has not materially disrupted its business operations or ability to serve patients.
The full scope of the unauthorized access remains under investigation. Quest did not disclose how many patient records may have been accessed or what information they contained.
