PETALING JAYA: Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun shocked higher-ranked compatriots Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani to lift the men’s doubles crown at the French Open tonight, ending Malaysia’s 22-year wait for a title in the category.
Sze Fei-Izzuddin, ranked world No 5, won the first game comfortably, but succumbed to the powerful play by 11th ranked Wei Chong-Kai Wun, who eventually won 13-21, 21-15, 21-7 in a match lasting 44 minutes at the Arena Grand Paris.
Malaysia last won the men’s doubles title at the World Tour Super 750 championships in 2004 through Gan Teik Chai-Koo Kien Keat,
The two pairs have won two matches each in their four encounters to date.
It was also Wei Chong-Kai Wun’s first World Tour title this year, while Sze Fei-Izzuddin are hunting for their third title after winning the Indonesia Masters in January and Indonesia Open in June.
