Duke could be without star running back Nate Sheppard, the nation’s leading rusher, when the Blue Devils take on archrival North Carolina on Saturday in Wallace Wade Stadium.
The sophomore is currently listed as questionable on the Blue Devils’ injury report, a massive concern for Manny Diaz’s squad. Sheppard leads the nation with 148.60 rushing yards per game and 180.8 all-purpose yards per game.
In Saturday’s loss to Georgia Tech, the Louisiana native appeared to have an ankle injury and headed to the injury tent for evaluation. He eventually returned to the game with his left ankle taped up, but he could be seen favoring it after some runs. On Duke’s final drive, Sheppard caught a short pass from Walker Eget and turned it into a 42-yard gain to Georgia Tech’s 23-yard line, setting up a game-tying field-goal attempt that Gavin Strange missed.
Sheppard was honored this week by Sports Illustrated and the Associated Press, being named to their midseason All-American teams.
