The West African Power Pool (WAPP) has unanimously re-elected Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz as chairman of its Executive Board for another three-year term.
The decision was taken at the 68th Executive Board meeting in Lome, Togo, on October 8 and 9, 2026, according to a statement from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
Abdulaziz, who is the Managing Director of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), thanked board members for their confidence and pledged to keep working with the team to advance WAPP’s cause.
He urged member utilities to take collective responsibility for building a more viable regional electricity market.
He stressed that members’ financial obligations underpin the pool’s independence. “Statutory contributions are not a formality; they are the basis of WAPP’s autonomy and capacity to act,” he said.
Abdulaziz said the Secretariat would keep pursuing cost-reduction measures without weakening its critical functions.
He described network synchronisation as a major technical achievement that must be backed by coordinated system operation, security arrangements and market readiness.
The regional market, he added, will deliver only if built on clear rules, reliable data, credible financial mechanisms and independent governance.
WAPP Secretary General, Mr. Abdoulaye Dia, said the institution had continued implementing guidelines on institutional strengthening and the progressive operationalisation of the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO) since the 67th meeting. Functional and accounting unbundling, he said, would let the WAPP Information and Coordination Centre ensure continuity during Phase 2 of the Regional Electricity Market, due to launch early next year.
Dia also urged members to settle outstanding contributions, saying regular funding and collective discipline were critical to WAPP’s credibility.
The board reviewed a restructuring study on ISMO operationalisation, described as in line with best practice and necessary to mitigate political interference. It also adopted the Charter of the Forum for Women in Energy in West Africa and a Memorandum of Understanding with the Millennium Challenge Account Côte d’Ivoire.
New board representatives welcomed include Mr. Lawrent Tossou of SBEE, representing Benin; Mr. Amidou Traore of CI-ENERGIES; and Mr. Julien Sagna of SOGEM.
The board also reviewed membership applications from four utilities: Konexa (Nigeria); SOGESART (Senegal); SOGEOH; and HOLDEN–Niger SARL, an independent power producer from Niger. They will be ratified at the WAPP General Assembly before the end of the year.
