Families of British nationals who go missing abroad are to receive additional support to help them cope with the uncertainty and emotional strain of searching for loved ones, under a new partnership between the UK Government and charity Missing People.
The arrangement will enable the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to refer consenting families receiving consular assistance to the charity for tailored support, including access to trained family support teams, peer support networks and family events.
The UK Government announced the partnership on Monday, October 19, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen consular services for British nationals and their families.
FCDO Minister for Consular, Stephen Doughty, said families whose relatives disappeared in distant parts of the world often faced additional difficulties accessing support.
“Not knowing where a loved one is, or what has happened to them, is a truly awful experience for any family – and when they have gone missing in a distant part of the world, accessing support can be even harder,” he said.
“We are committed to strengthening our support for British people with a modern consular service that ensures they receive compassionate and professional support at every step.
“As part of that, our new partnership with Missing People will help provide enhanced support to families and friends in some of their most difficult moments.”
According to the FCDO, it handles hundreds of cases involving people who go missing abroad each year.
The department said it helps families contact local authorities, arrange meetings with them and receive updates on developments in the cases.
The charity, meanwhile, works directly with the families and friends of missing people and supports around 10,000 people affected by disappearances annually.
Director of Services at Missing People, Sophie Lapham, said families searching for relatives abroad often had to contend with unfamiliar systems and language barriers.
“When someone goes missing abroad, families can find themselves facing enormous uncertainty and distress. They are forced to navigate unfamiliar systems and language barriers, often from thousands of miles away. We are delighted to be partnering with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to ensure more families can access support during some of the most difficult moments of their lives,” she said.
She added, “For more than 30 years, Missing People has been supporting missing people, as well as families and friends living through the trauma of a disappearance. This partnership will strengthen our ability to work alongside the FCDO, offering missing people and families hope, guidance and a trusted source of support for as long as they need.”
The partnership forms part of the UK Government’s wider efforts to strengthen consular services and ensure British nationals receive support when they need it.
