Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam on Sunday inaugurated a programme to provide eye examinations and free spectacles to government drivers as part of National Road Safety Day 2026.
The five-day initiative will run on October 18–19 and October 25–27, with drivers from the relevant ministries, divisions and government offices receiving eye tests during the scheduled period, according to a ministry press release.
The Road Transport and Highways Division and VisionSpring Bangladesh jointly organised the programme at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Around 300 drivers from 39 ministries and government offices, including the President’s Office, Prime Minister’s Office and Cabinet Division, will undergo eye examinations.
Those found to need spectacles will receive them free of charge based on their test results, the release said.
State Minister for the Road Transport and Highways Division and Railways Ministry Habib Ur Rashid and Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary Dr Mohammad Ziaul Haque attended the event as special guests.
VisionSpring Bangladesh Managing Director Misha Mahjabin was also present.
The initiative aims to highlight the importance of clear vision in road safety and help ensure safer journeys for drivers and passengers.
Identifying vision problems and providing appropriate spectacles are expected to help reduce potential road risks and improve health awareness among drivers.
