The Los Angeles Chargers finalized an addition before their Week 6 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chargers officially signed Jake Browning to the practice squad on Wednesday. The Ringer's Tom Pelissero reported the move on Tuesday evening.
Browning quickly made an NFL impact for the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted rookie in 2023. Replacing an injured Joe Burrow, he completed 70.4% of his passes with a 98.4 quarterback rating in nine games.
However, Browning's next chance didn't go as well. He threw eight interceptions in four games, and the Bengals lost all three of his starts before sitting him for the newly acquired Joe Flacco.
Cincinnati declined to extend Browning a qualifying offer after the 2025 season, making him a free agent. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed him in March but cut him at the end of the preseason.
Browning could join the Chargers' active roster at some point this season. They sought quarterback depth behind Justin Herbert after placing Trey Lance on the injured reserve with a groin injury.

DJ Uiagalelei must now fend off the more experienced Browning for the AFC West squad's QB2 position. The Chargers signed him to the active roster at the end of September, but the 25-year-old has yet to play in an NFL game.
Even with Herbert struggling, it's a stretch to picture Browning or Uiagalelei causing any quarterback controversy this season. Yet the Chargers are scrambling for answers during a surprising 0-5 start following back-to-back playoff appearances under head coach Jim Harbaugh.
The Chargers will seek their first win when they play the undefeated Chiefs this Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
