The Philadelphia 76ers have built a superteam almost overnight with the trade for Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown and signing of LeBron James. Between those two, Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, there's no shortage of players who could make a case to be the go-to guy.
While an abundance of elite players could lead to strife on some teams, Embiid is convinced it won't affect Philly. The former MVP said everyone will have a chance to eat after Friday's preseason win over the Boston Celtics.
"I'm against the concept of sacrificing," Embiid said. "I think the way I explained it was you do what you do best, and we're going to support you. … I don't think anybody has to take a back seat."
It's easy to say in practice but more difficult to execute in reality. Nick Nurse will have his hands full in managing this roster and its egos, particularly as urgency is high with James in the twilight of his career. It should help Nurse that Embiid and James will likely have their minutes managed over the course of the season for health and maintenance reasons.
Embiid is entering somewhat of a prove-it year. He hasn't played 40+ games since his MVP season in 2023 and has been subject to trade rumors centered around one of James' all-time favorite teammates, Anthony Davis. The pressure has seemingly been positive for Embiid, who underwent an impressive physical transformation in an effort to stay on the court.
We'll get our first impressions of the new-look 76ers when they tip their season off against the Knicks on Tuesday.
