Welsh fingerstyle virtuoso Gwenifer Raymond caught the attention of many discerning listeners with last year's Last Night I Heard The Dog Star Bark, including Geese, who included Raymond as part of the rotating cast of openers on their current tour. The Brighton-based guitarist has also since linked up with Fat Possum, who today are sharing her first release for the label. After some scene-setting, "Bird Songs For Atomic Skies" becomes a blustery acoustic rave-up that barely lets you catch your breath.
Some words from Raymond via Bandcamp:
"Bird Songs for Atomic Skies" is a mutant rag, a blues gone awry. Lyrebirds are perched in irradiated nests and have grown new heads. Foxes bark in the night, but the barks are all wrong. This song is an assembly of sounds run through the wringer of an atomic age; New limbs are springing up by the hour.
On Instagram, she adds:
I recorded it this summer in Montréal between shows when I had a few days to stop and take a breath.
Haven’t quite learned to play it yet but might give it an airing at some point on my forever tour of the US, Canada, Europe and the UK between now and Christmas. Hopefully catch you at a show soon!
