Indoor climbing has grown steadily since the country's first commercial climbing gym opened in Seattle in 1987. There were nearly 700 commercial gyms across the United States at the start of 2026, with about 7.5 million square feet of climbing between them, according to Climbing Business Journal, even as many operators face tougher economic conditions this year. That growth has not been spread evenly, and some metro areas have far more places to climb than their size would suggest.
Climbing Business Journal, an industry trade outlet, measured that unevenness with a climbing wall density index, which combines each market's number of commercial gyms, total wall surface, population and land area, for metro areas above 250,000 people using gym data from April 2026. Boulder, Colorado comes out well ahead, with a score of 275.9, more than five times second-place San Francisco's 49.2, while New York has more roped gyms than any other market, at 24. The 10 markets below scored highest, and each slide names the prominent gyms there.

Boulder tops the ranking with a score of 275.9, more than five times second-place San Francisco's, even though it has the smallest population of the 10 markets, about 329,000 people. Its nine gyms, three roped, five bouldering and one for drytool and ice climbing, offer nearly 88,000 square feet of wall. For comparison, the whole country had nearly 700 commercial gyms and about 7.5 million square feet of climbing at the start of 2026.
Prominent gyms include Boulder Rock Club, which opened in 1991, and The Spot Boulder, which opened in 2002 and calls itself the first dedicated bouldering gym in the United States. Movement Boulder offers roped climbing and bouldering across 22,000 square feet, along with a yoga studio. Visit Boulder has billed The Ice Coop as North America's first indoor ice climbing gym.

The San Francisco market ranks second at 49.2, with 19 gyms and 252,088 square feet of wall, and a 20th, the California Climbing Collective, planned. California has more climbing gyms than any other state, and this is the most climbing-dense market on the West Coast.
Touchstone runs nine of the market's gyms, starting with Mission Cliffs, its first, which opened in San Francisco in 1995. Its Pacific Pipe Company in Oakland, opened in 2021 in a 1920s manufacturing warehouse, is the largest climbing gym in the country at 47,000 square feet, and its Dogpatch Boulders in San Francisco is the largest bouldering gym, at 20,500 square feet. Movement and Benchmark each operate two gyms here.

Boston ranks third at 35.4 and has the densest commercial climbing in the Northeast, with 23 gyms and 237,806 square feet of wall. Climbers there have trained at commercial gyms for more than 35 years, since Boston Rock Gym opened in 1989, though that gym closed in 2018.
Central Rock Gym runs nine gyms in the market, MetroRock four and Rock Spot four. With nearly two dozen facilities, the area offers elite competitions, youth teams, fitness classes and gym-to-crag education.
New Haven, Connecticut

New Haven ranks fourth at 21.4, the runner-up in the Northeast, with four gyms and 28,005 square feet of wall. The market has about one-seventh the climbing of the Seattle area but also about one-seventh the population, which keeps its density high.
Its first gym, Prime Climb, opened in 1993 and is now Rock Spot Wallingford. City Climb followed in 2007, Ascent Climbing Gym also operates there, and Rock Spot New Haven opened in 2024.

Seattle ranks fifth at 19.2 and has the densest climbing in the Pacific Northwest, with 20 facilities and 189,460 square feet of wall. Its 14 bouldering gyms tie Los Angeles for the most in the country, in a market with about a third of Los Angeles's population.
The market is home to the first commercial climbing gym in the U.S., now named Vertical World, which opened in 1987. Seattle Bouldering Project's Poplar gym, opened in 2011, is the second-largest bouldering gym in the country at 19,941 square feet. Edgeworks and Momentum also operate in the area, along with a drytool and ice facility.

New York ranks sixth at 18.6 but leads in sheer volume, with 37 gyms and 452,927 square feet of wall, including 24 roped gyms, more than any other market. It is the only metro area to rank in the top 10 on both the density index and CBJ's separate opportunity score, which gauges how likely a market is to add gyms.
The Gravity Vault runs 11 of the market's gyms, with a 12th planned for Edison, while Movement and VITAL each operate four. VITAL Brooklyn, which opened in 2021, is the third-largest bouldering gym in the country at 18,633 square feet and the largest in New York.

Los Angeles ranks seventh at 14.4, behind San Francisco among California markets. It has 30 gyms, the second-most of any market, and 342,929 square feet of wall, and its population of nearly 13 million is the second-highest on the list.
Sender One, Touchstone and Hangar 18 each operate six or more gyms in the area, according to CBJ, which counts them among the largest gym developers in the country. The market's first gym, Rock City Climbing Center, opened in 1991 and closed in 2021.
San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad, California

San Diego ranks eighth at 12.5, with 14 gyms and 172,916 square feet of wall. Its first commercial gym, the original Vertical Hold Sport Climbing Center, opened in 1993 and now operates gyms in San Diego and Poway.
Two other multi-location operators also started here, VITAL and Mesa Rim, and each has grown to half a dozen or more gyms around the country. Mesa Rim's Austin gym, its sixth location, opened in 2023 as the largest new climbing gym in North America that year.
Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, Oregon

Portland ranks ninth at 10.1, with 11 gyms and 149,422 square feet of wall, and a Movement gym planned for Happy Valley in 2027. The original Portland Rock Gym opened in 1988 and is regarded as the second commercial climbing gym in the United States.
Its Beaverton location, opened in 2023 with roped terrain finished in 2024, has 40,000 square feet of climbing, tied for fourth-largest in the country, in a 65,000-square-foot building. It also has the first Titan bouldering wall in North America, based on the design used at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Circuit, which has operated in Portland for more than 20 years, runs three of the market's gyms.
Fort Collins-Loveland, Colorado

Fort Collins rounds out the list at 9.6, with five gyms and 53,674 square feet of wall, one of four Front Range markets in the top 25 of CBJ's index. The area's first gym, Inner Strength, opened in 1993 and closed in 2017, and five more have opened since.
Ascent Studio, which opened in 2016, has roped walls up to 49 feet tall, bouldering sections 15 feet high and an official speed climbing lane. Whetstone Climbing in south Fort Collins is billed by Visit Fort Collins as the largest indoor climbing gym in Northern Colorado.
The index measures how much commercial climbing a market has relative to its size, not gym quality or crowding, and CBJ notes it is not a measure of saturation. Gym counts change as gyms open and close.
