Nigeria international Akor Adams scored the decisive goal as Venezia secured a surprise 1-0 victory over Napoli in their Serie A encounter on Saturday, ending their poor run at the start of the season.
Adams struck four minutes into the second half to hand Venezia all three points against the former Italian champions, who had not lost an away league match since last month.
The 25-year-old forward capitalised on a long ball forward, getting ahead of his marker before unleashing a shot that took a deflection and beat the Napoli goalkeeper.
The goal was Adams’ second in the league this season and a timely boost for Venezia, who had struggled to find their rhythm in the opening weeks of the campaign.
The Nigerian striker and his teammates subsequently held firm defensively to secure their first clean sheet of the season and complete a memorable afternoon for the home supporters.
The victory was Venezia’s first against Napoli in any competition in 23 years, dating back to a 2-1 win in Serie B in 2003. It also marked their first Serie A victory over the Naples-based club in the 21st century.
Despite the important result, Venezia remained at the bottom of the Serie A table with three points from seven matches, according to the report.
Adams, a former Sevilla forward, will hope his match-winning contribution provides the momentum needed for Venezia to revive their campaign and climb away from the relegation zone.
