An axe-wielding man has been restrained by a group of tradies after an alleged attempted carjacking following a massive peak-hour pile-up in Melbourne’s north.
Emergency services were called to an eight-vehicle collision at the intersection of Sydney Rd and Bolinda Rd in Campbellfield about 7am on Thursday.

One of the drivers, a 29-year-old man wearing a balaclava and gloves, was allegedly armed with an axe and attempted to steal another vehicle.
He allegedly tried to carjack another motorist before being struck by a ute and sent flying.
Dazed but undeterred, the man staggered to his feet and fled down a nearby street.
What he didn’t count on was a group of tradies giving chase, tackling him to the ground and making a citizen’s arrest.
Photos from the scene show the man lying face down on the ground with his hands restrained by cable ties.

The Altona North man was arrested by police and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries under police guard.
No other injuries were reported.
“All I’ve heard was a big ‘bang bang’ couple times and what the hell, so I’ve driven past the truck and I’ve just seen this guy run out,” witness Nicholas said.
“It was surprising how quick they grabbed him, but you know what, at least he got caught and hopefully he doesn’t do that again.
Another witness, Jaimie, said he had no sympathy for the man.
“He’s got blood, cops come down the street, get him and he’s gone,” he said.
“He deserved it, 100 per cent deserved it, no remorse,” Jaimie said.
7NEWS understands the Toyota involved in the incident was stolen from Reservoir three days earlier.
Police are continuing to investigate and are yet to identify the alleged carjacking victim, who is being urged to come forward.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, has footage or any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
