Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal has announced plans to improve the professional training, salaries, and working conditions of nurses at federal hospitals.
Addressing a certificate distribution ceremony for nursing students at Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University in Islamabad, the minister said the completion of training for 50 nurses was the first step towards strengthening the nursing profession across the country.
He said nursing plays a vital role in healthcare delivery but has not received the recognition it deserves in Pakistan.
He announced that the government will introduce reforms in the Pakistan Nursing Council to strengthen the healthcare system.
Kamal said corruption in the nursing regulatory system had previously allowed nursing colleges to obtain approvals through bribery.
He said nursing colleges should focus on quality education and professional training rather than commercial interests.
The minister also announced sweeping reforms at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, saying the changes were aimed at preventing future incidents and improving hospital administration.
He said the new system will not adversely affect existing employees, while future recruitment at PIMS will be conducted on a contract basis.
The hospital’s board will also be empowered to enforce accountability and discipline.
Kamal said he expects visible improvements at PIMS within six months, adding that the government’s priority is to address systemic shortcomings rather than single out individuals for blame.
