Tuesday was a night of crucial league games for both Warrenton and Astoria volleyball teams. The Warriors traveled to Corbett and Astoria hosted 4A No.1 team Valley Catholic at The Brickhouse. Elsewhere, Seaside took on Scappoose and Knappa ran into a hot Clatskanie team.
Astoria volleyball strikes out
After a strong weekend at the Seaside Volleyball Tournament, the Astoria Fishermen were back in action on Tuesday against the top-ranked team in 4A. Much like Marist Catholic, the Valley Catholic Valiants are blessed with most of their team members playing year-round club volleyball. The Valiants used this to their advantage as they put together a dominant three set win, 25-14, 25-14, 25-14. The win moved them two games clear of Astoria in the Cowapa League race and on the cusp of a league title.
Strong hitting from senior Maeve Albert, sophomore Emma Sarantakos, junior Hadley Entizne and senior Sara Tinker gave the Valiants a versatile attack. With setter Jaya McGregor pulling the strings, the Valiants did a good job of keeping Astoria’s defense on the back foot.
After the victory, Valley Catholic is now 22-2, with both losses coming at the hands of 5A No. 1 Crescent Valley.
Astoria had moments of good play in this one, but were not quite as sharp as they were last Saturday in Seaside. The Fishermen had some trouble with Valley’s short serves and didn’t have the depth or firepower to hang with the Valiants.
Then on Thursday, The Fishermen completed a winless week as they fell to Banks in four sets, 25-17, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21.
With the loss, Astoria, Banks and Tillamook are now tied for second place behind Valley Catholic. At 4-3, the three teams are in a race to the finish with Astoria still holding the edge. The Fishermen have another difficult road game against Tillamook next Tuesday before finishing off the season against Scappoose and Seaside. Meanwhile, Banks and Tillamook still have one more game each against Valley Catholic. A schedule advantage just might help Astoria over the finish line to get an automatic qualifying spot in the 4A state playoffs.
Despite the back-to-back losses this week, Astoria remained the No. 9 ranked team in 4A. This is because Valley Catholic, Banks, Tillamook and Scappoose are all ranked inside the top 16.
Warrenton volleyball splits
Four sets here, four sets there.
After outlasting Corbett in four sets on Sept. 24, the Warriors fell in four sets to the Cardinals on Tuesday night. Corbett defeated Warrenton 25-21, 25-18, 15-25, 25-22 to tie up the second-place race in the 3A Coastal Range standings. Both teams are now 3-3, three games behind league leader Catlin Gabel.
Thursday was straightforward for Warrenton as they swept aside Neah-Kah-Nie 25-12, 25-10 and 25-22. The Warriors were very sharp the first two sets, but had to grind in set three to ensure a quick night.
With league rival Corbett also victorious, the two teams look headed for a second-place tie in the Coastal Range League. Warrenton has last-place Rainier and the Cardinals have Neah-Kah-Nie to wrap up the regular season. The Warriors are currently ranked No. 15 in the 3A standings.
Seaside still winless in league
Seaside volleyball remained winless in league as they fell to Scappoose and Tillamook this week. The Seagulls lost in three sets to the Indians 25-19, 25-15, and 25-23 on Tuesday and in five sets to Tillamook on Thursday.
Seaside’s volleyball team came within two points of getting its first Cowapa League win on Thursday against Tillamook.
The Seagulls and Cheesemakers took part in a five-set doozy in Seaside. Both teams threw punches at each other and Tillamook barely held on to defeat Seaside 15-13 in the fifth set. In total, the match went 25-13, 15-25, 25-15, 20-25, 15-13 in favor of the Cheesemakers. The win for Tillamook kept them alive for second place in the Cowapa league and extended Seaside’s losing streak to nine games.
Despite the loss, Seaside can be proud of the performance. The team has made strides from last season and are victims of the Cowapa League being perhaps the deepest league in all of 4A this year. Games against Valley Catholic, Astoria and Banks will wrap up the season for Seaside.
Knappa volleyball wraps
Knappa’s volleyball season is now in the books after the Loggers played their final two games this week.
A 25-11, 25-7, 25-7 loss to Clatskanie on Tuesday extended the Loggers’ losing streak to seven games in a row.
The Loggers concluded their season with a four-set loss to Faith Bible/Life Christian on Thursday. Knappa won the first set 25-20, but were not able to keep up the momentum as the Falcons flew past them. Faith Bible won the next three sets 25-17, 25-11 and 25-12 to finish off their win.
Knappa finished the 2026 volleyball season with 4-12 overall record and 1-9 record in league play.
