Counterfeit wine is a quietly enormous problem. Cardano is pitching a fix that fits in the palm of your hand.
The Cardano Foundation’s on-chain verification system lets consumers confirm where a bottle of wine came from by scanning a QR code. As of mid-2026, more than 30 wineries in Georgia have adopted it, and over 100,000 bottles can now be traced on the blockchain.
That matters because fake wine is not a niche nuisance. Counterfeiting costs European producers an estimated €2.8 billion a year, and the people paying for it are winemakers and buyers alike.
How the verification actually works
Think of it like a passport for a bottle. Each bottle gets a digital fingerprint, plus metadata describing its origin, and that record lives on the Cardano blockchain.
A buyer scans the QR code on the label. Within seconds, the system checks whether the bottle’s details match what was recorded on-chain.
Digital signatures do the heavy lifting behind the scenes. Put simply, each record carries a cryptographic seal that shows who issued it and whether anyone has tampered with it since.
The system does not replace paper. It works alongside traditional paper certificates, giving producers and buyers two separate ways to confirm a bottle is legitimate.
Suppliers can use the same verification tools as consumers. That means distributors and retailers further down the chain can check authenticity before a bottle ever reaches a shelf.
From a Georgian valley to an open-source toolkit
The program’s home base is Georgia’s Bolnisi region. The Cardano Foundation built it in cooperation with the country’s National Wine Agency and other local partners.
The Georgian Wine Traceability Program officially launched in 2022, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding between the parties involved.
In August 2026, an open-source reference implementation called OriginateNavio was released for wine provenance tracking.
In October 2026, the Cardano Foundation showcased the initiative and its potential impact on the wine and spirits market.
What this means for Cardano and the industry
The Georgian program stands out because it has numbers attached. More than 30 wineries and over 100,000 traceable bottles is not global scale, but it is real usage in a real market.
Partnering with a national body like the National Wine Agency gives the system institutional weight that a purely private effort would lack.
OriginateNavio could be a key variable in wider adoption. By releasing the reference implementation as open source, the Cardano Foundation lowers the barrier for other producers.
A QR code only helps if buyers actually scan it, and changing shopper habits is a slower process than shipping software.
