The Los Angeles Chargers are enduring a disastrous start to the 2026 NFL season, as the organization has struggled from the very beginning and its record has fallen to 0-5 following another disappointing defeat.
Quarterback Justin Herbert’s performance has raised concerns, and he has been facing criticism as fans expected him to compete at a much higher level.
Chargers Analyst Questions Justin Herbert’s Future
On a recent episode of “The Herd with Colin Cowherd”, analyst Nick Wright and Colin Cowherd shared their perspective on the quarterback following Herbert’s struggles and said:
“I, like everybody else, am flummoxed by Justin Herbert. So he’s 28, four years left on his deal, plus a no-trade clause, $24 million, $36 million, $52 million, $50.5 million. I mean, do you – I wouldn’t, but do you think the discussions are being had about it’s unfixable?” Cowherd said.
“Well, I – listen, I’m not that confused by Justin Herbert. Other people are. I’m not. He hasn’t been – he hasn’t been an elite player in four years. Yeah. He has been – he has had flashes. He looks the part. Yeah. But right now, like, right – if you are – and I’ll answer the question, but I – if you were Justin Herbert’s agent, what do you hang your hat on? What is the thing he’s great at other than how he looks in warm-ups? And the answer is nothing. There are – or things – or you can call on truly elite statistical seasons back when there were no fans in the stands and we were all wearing masks. That’s the last time Herbert had an elite statistical season.” Wright added.

Although Herbert is facing much of the criticism, the Chargers have struggled as a team. The quarterback needs to get back on track, improve his decision-making, and avoid mistakes in crucial moments. The franchise cannot afford to continue making costly errors if it hopes to turn its season around.
The coming weeks will bring increased pressure on both Herbert and the organization as they attempt to end their losing streak and restore confidence inside the locker room. It remains to be seen whether Herbert can improve his performances and silence his critics or whether the Chargers will consider making significant changes to their long-term plans.
The situation also raises questions about the Chargers’ long-term strategy and their ability to build a championship-contending roster. Trading Herbert could provide valuable draft capital, but finding a replacement capable of delivering consistent performances would be a significant challenge. On the other hand, keeping him would require the organization to strengthen its offensive weapons and improve protection. The coaching staff must carefully evaluate its options before making major decisions that could shape the franchise’s future for several seasons.
