Assam Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah has launched the Chief Minister’s Green Task Force, bringing together 82 students who received training abroad under the Chief Minister’s Green Fellowship programme.
The initiative aims to utilise the knowledge and experience gained by the trainees to strengthen environmental conservation efforts in the state. According to Mallabaruah, the students will be part of the task force and contribute to various green initiatives.
The minister said discussions had been held on how the trainees could apply their learning to environmental protection. Their performance and the practical impact of their training will be assessed before further batches are considered for similar opportunities.
Plans are also underway to develop eco-sensitive zones along both banks of the Bharalu River in Guwahati. He indicated that the process would require the gradual clearance of the identified areas.
Legal Mining for Development Projects
Addressing the availability of construction materials, the minister said work on the proposed Guwahati ring road would begin soon. The project is expected to require substantial quantities of materials such as stone and sand.
He stressed the need to ensure that these materials are sourced through legal channels. He said legal stone and sand quarries would be permitted to operate within authorised limits to meet construction requirements while preventing illegal extraction.
The government is expected to issue several tenders related to legal mining within the next week, with the settlement process targeted for completion by November.
On the issue of monkey control, Mallabaruah said a team had visited Himachal Pradesh to study and review the measures adopted there.
Further details on the Green Task Force’s specific responsibilities and the timeline for the ring road project are awaited.
