Johannesburg Water has moved to update affected residents in Bezuidenhout Valley after releasing preliminary water quality results, but the all-clear has not yet been given.
The utility issued a media statement on Friday, 23 October, confirming that initial results from the affected area show no signs of contamination. Despite the encouraging findings, Johannesburg Water stressed that full microbiological results are still pending, meaning the precautionary alert remains firmly in place.
What caused the alert
The incident traces back to a contractor who was excavating to replace a sewer pipe at the corner of 6th Street and 8th Avenue when a tree stump fell onto a water pipeline, causing damage. Repair teams wrapped up work on Wednesday night, 21 October, but testing of the water supply has been ongoing since then.

Which streets are affected
Johannesburg Water was clear that the alert does not apply to all of Bezuidenhout Valley. Only properties situated along 8th Avenue at the intersections with 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Streets fall within the affected zone.
The supply to those properties remains isolated and will not be reopened until quality clearance is officially granted. In the meantime, the utility says it will continue providing residents with an alternative water supply.
What residents should do next
Residents in the affected area must not drink or use the tap water until Johannesburg Water issues a formal notice confirming it is safe to do so. The entity continued sampling on Friday to build a fuller picture of water quality conditions in the area.
Final results, including the complete microbiological findings, are expected on Saturday, 24 October. Johannesburg Water has committed to sharing a further update on Saturday that will outline those findings and any adjustments to the precautionary measures currently in place.
Residents with questions or concerns can reach the Johannesburg Water call centre on 010 061 4470.

"I feel water restrictions are coming as well. We plan for nothing."
