By Zoila Palma: Belizean scholar Giann Vasquez is preparing to embark on a three-year doctoral programme at the Université de La Réunion in France, following his completion of a joint master’s degree through the European Union-funded Erasmus Mundus scholarship programme.
The European Union in Belize congratulated Vasquez on his academic achievement, highlighting his progress as an example of the opportunities available to Belizeans through international education.
Vasquez completed a Joint Master’s Degree in Tropical Biodiversity and Ecosystems at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Belgium. His studies were supported by an Erasmus Mundus scholarship, which provides opportunities for students to pursue advanced education through international academic partnerships.
During his doctoral studies, Vasquez will continue research on leptospirosis, a disease he previously investigated as part of his master’s thesis. His PhD research is expected to build on that earlier work and contribute to a deeper understanding of the disease, which remains an important public health concern.
The European Union in Belize described Vasquez’s achievement as an example of how the Erasmus Mundus programme can support academic excellence and create opportunities for further professional development.
