A Hong Kong court has sentenced a former assistant warden at a care home for people with intellectual disabilities to 13 years in prison for raping a female resident five times, with the judge condemning the assaults as “extremely despicable”.
High Court Judge Douglas Yau Tak-hong on Wednesday sentenced Chung Pui-kei, 38, who was found guilty of five counts of raping the 23-year-old resident at Hong Chi Pinehill Integrated Vocational Training Centre Kwong Fuk Hostel in Tai Po.
“The defendant’s crime is extremely despicable and he is at high risk of reoffending,” Yau said. “Even the psychiatrist or psychologist found no remorse in [him]. That is appalling.”
The judge chastised Chung for “abusing his power” as the victim’s carer and betraying the trust his employer and the victim’s family had placed in him. He noted that the 13-year sentence reflected the gravity of Chung’s crimes.
