On the very shores their ancestors left behind 166 years ago, a group gathered in India to honour one of the most significant chapters in South African history. The 1860 Heritage Centre shared photos of the commemoration on 12 October 2026, the anniversary of the day the SS Truro set sail from Madras, now known as Chennai.

The steamship departed on 12 October 1860, carrying 342 men, women, and children recruited as indentured labourers for Natal's sugar cane plantations. The voyage was brutal. Passengers were confined below deck under cramped conditions, with men and women kept strictly apart. Around 30 people died before the ship reached Port Natal, now Durban, on 16 November 1860.

A Journey That Shaped a Nation

Those who survived faced more hardship on arrival. Workers were processed by colonial officials and placed in incomplete barracks before being sent to plantations as far as 36 kilometres away. They came from diverse backgrounds, including Hindus, Muslims, and Christians from various castes and trades. Among them was Hazrat Badsha Peer, listed as Passenger No. 282, who went on to become a revered Sufi saint in Durban. His shrine still stands today.

Between 1860 and 1911, roughly 152,184 indentured Indians arrived in South Africa across 384 voyages. Their contributions shaped the country's culture, economy, and identity in ways still felt today.

The photos from India stirred deep emotion among South Africans with Indian roots, many of whom said seeing the tribute from the other side of the ocean meant more than words could express.

South Africans felt the weight of the moment in the comments section on the Facebook page:

@Nadine Sigamoney wrote:

"This is so special. Thank you for acknowledging the journey of our ancestors 🙏🏽"

@Limeshan Govender shared:

"A truly moving tribute to our ancestors. To see their journey remembered on the shores of their motherland means so much to us here in South Africa. Namma ancestors-oda payanamum thiyagamum endrum marakkama irukkattum [May our ancestors' journey and sacrifice never be forgotten]. 🙏🏽 Jai Hind!"

@Kamsheela Dawakee added:

"Thank you for remembering and acknowledging where my heritage stems from. Truly blessed and grateful for my ancestors and their contributions to my life today 🙏🫶🏼"

@Gopinath Krishnamurthy noted:

"Thanks for sharing our prayers. For the past 50 years, our family has been doing this on 12th October."

@Ashley Robert Siga reflected:

"Wonderful to see these ancestors being honoured, and their journey remembered 🇿🇦. However, let's also be honest about the history. Indentured labour was part of the colonial system used across the British Empire. These people were taken thousands of kilometres from home to provide cheap labour for colonial economies. We should honour their resilience, but never lose sight of the system that brought them there in the first place."

@Deirdre Conradie concluded:

"What a wonderful pilgrimage to uncover family heritage. It warms the heart to know you have set foot in the waters your ancestors left behind. They were brave and courageous people!"
