A Channel 4 experiment about whether members of the British public can be persuaded to accept Nazi-inspired policies targeting disabled people has sparked major controversy.
The Experiment, which aired on Wednesday, explores how easily people could be swayed by propaganda that disguises disturbing ideas as a compassionate solution to the UK’s social care crisis.
The programme centres on a fictional residential facility called SegriLife House, which claims to offer a ‘radical model of supported living’.
On the surface, the facility appears to provide a practical and caring approach to supporting disabled people. But its underlying principles are inspired by Nazi-era policies of segregation and persecution.
Across social media and amongst critics, the documentary has prompted fierce debate, with many taking aim at Channel 4 for its decision to broadcast such a provocative experiment.
Taking to X, viewers questioned the purpose of the experiment, with one user called Alex writing: ‘The Experiment is most controversial thing on our screens this year. Channel 4 should put their Heads down in utter shame.’
Another user called Jack also asked: ‘What is the purpose of this sinister weirdness from Channel 4? It’s the product of a disturbed mind. What are they attempting to achieve?’
However, many other viewers praised how urgent and shocking the show was, with @leizenomis writing: ‘Seeing the ads in TV, I didn’t know what the experiment would be, but my goodness, this is incredibly shocking. Ableist propaganda has just evolved and it is evident that many of us are oblivious to it.’
@EmiEleode also argued that show highlighted how ‘we’re going backwards with how disabled people are treated in Britain’.
She continued: ‘With draconian laws, mass neglect, accessibility being stripped back. The dehumanisation from politicians etc. It’s depressing to see.’
The Channel 4 show aims to reveal whether ordinary people could be persuaded to accept the idea that disabled people are less deserving of a place in society.
The documentary also examines the horrific history of Nazi persecution, with presenter and disability rights campaigner Sophie Morgan and actor Mat Fraser visiting a former Nazi killing centre in Austria.
Between 1939 and 1945, the Nazi regime murdered an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 people with physical and mental disabilities as part of its so-called T4 programme.
Before that, a 1933 law paved the way for the forced sterilisation of hundreds of thousands of people deemed ‘unfit’ by the regime. Those targeted included people with conditions ranging from epilepsy to alcoholism.
Both Morgan and Fraser said in a statement: ‘It was important for us to finally bring the catastrophic history of Aktion T4 and the Nazis’ persecution of disabled people to our television screens, but more importantly we wanted to test whether the British public could be persuaded by similar propaganda today – to believe that disabled people are disposable, or less deserving of a place in society.
‘Through the fantastic dedication of our disabled actors and the production team who brought the disturbing world of SegriLife to life, we were able to put that question to the test.’
The pair warned that the programme comes at a time when disability rights are under threat in the UK and around the world.
They added: ‘It is reminiscent of a time many of us would rather forget, but this programme shows that the chances of repeating the past are far higher than we think.
‘Peering behind the veil of the public perception of disability isn’t for the faint-hearted, but this is essential viewing.’
The Experiment is available to watch on Channel 4.
