Fresh fanboy rumors 'couldn't be more false'

Since the launch of the new DC cinematic universe under James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios has been under intense scrutiny from fans as he retools Warner Bros.' slate of superhero movies and TV shows. While Superman and Lanterns have been hits, this summer's Supergirl was an unqualified disaster for the fledgling DCU, leading to unsubstantiated speculation about another overhaul and votes of no confidence in Gunn. While Gunn and Peter Safran have received renewed trust in shepherding the DCU under Warner Bros. Discovery's new ownership, angry DC fans are always looking for vulnerabilities.
One such story popped up last week, when Supergirl star Milly Alcock scrubbed her Instagram account of any and all mentions of the DC Studios film. The innocuous move spawned headlines that speculated that Alcock had been fired, recast, or quit the DCU, despite little evidence to back up that claim. As often does, Gunn responded to the rumors and speculation directly.
On Threads, Gunn called the rumor that Alcock had been removed from her role as Supergirl "BS," adding that it and other rumors regarding in-development DCU projects "couldn't be more false."
Gunn continues to respond to 'fan' nonsense
Gunn was actually responding to three different rumors, including that Matt Reeves is no longer directing The Batman Part 2 — he is, though Steven Soderbergh is stepping in to help Reeves finish filming — and that Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow "had a test screening and it got poor reviews." The Alcock-Supergirl rumor was just another bit of nonsense that Gunn felt forced to address.
To all of this, Gunn responded: "Oh brother. You guys just have to stop listening to BS, and I'm mostly done shooting down rumors as there are so many, and I'm not on here much. But all three of these couldn't be more false. I'm showing PETER SAFRAN my first Director's Cut today — he's the first person to see it obviously — and that's a month early!"
As is usually the case with comic book movie rumors like this, there's a lot more smoke than fire. A much more likely explanation for Alcock scrubbing her heavily curated Instagram profile of Supergirl mentions is that she's done promoting the film and doesn't want to give space to weirdos who comment on women's social media posts.
Regardless, Alcock is set to return as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl next year in DC Studios' Man of Tomorrow. She joins David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, who will reprise their roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lex Luthor, respectively. The film also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart/Green Lantern and Adria Arjona, reportedly as Maxima (although some rumors suggest she may be Wonder Woman). Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard, and Sinqua Walls have been cast in unspecified roles.
Supergirl is now streaming on HBO Max. Man of Tomorrow comes to movie theaters on July 9, 2027.
