Premier League winner Tim Sherwood has described Alex Iwobi as one of the most underrated players in the English top flight after the Fulham midfielder’s goal helped beat Hull City 1-0 on Saturday.
Sherwood, who won the title with Blackburn Rovers in 1995 and later managed Tottenham Hotspur, spoke on Sky Sports after the game at Craven Cottage.
“Iwobi must be one of the most underrated players in the Premier League,” he said.
“The amount of games he churns out, the different positions he plays. He was excellent today. He was the goal scorer, but he was absolutely fantastic today,” he added.
Iwobi struck in the 33rd minute after Sander Berge set him up when Hull twice failed to clear their lines. His shot took a deflection and went under goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.
The 30-year-old former Arsenal and Everton midfielder had gone six league games without a goal or an assist, despite creating 13 chances. The goal was his first of the season and took him to 36 Premier League goals in 327 appearances, level with Peter Odemwingie among Nigerians.
The win was Fulham’s first of the season and the first under manager Alvaro Arbeloa, and it lifted them off the bottom of the table. Fellow Super Eagles Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi played the full game for Fulham and Hull respectively.
