When novelist Stephen King and his wife, Tabitha King, pledged $3 million to renovate the Bangor Public Library in Maine in 2013, the donation came with a condition: the institution had to raise another $6 million.
The challenge helped set a wider fundraising effort in motion, with the library meeting its $9 million target in July 2014 before the modernisation project reached $9.6 million by 2016.The story was not simply about a celebrity making a large donation. The Kings’ pledge formed one-third of the proposed fundraising target, requiring the library to secure support from voters, businesses, foundations and individual donors.
The result was a project that addressed problems threatening the historic building while introducing facilities intended to make it more useful to the community.
A leaking roof prompted the campaign
The Bangor Public Library was confronting a basic but serious problem: its copper roof, installed when the building was constructed in the early 20th century, had developed leaks. Water had entered the building during storms, at one point running down the main staircase.
The damage threatened the building and raised concerns about protecting its collection. The library housed more than 500,000 volumes, according to a 2013 Bangor Daily News report. Officials wanted to repair the roof but also improve the building’s interior and make its facilities more practical for readers, staff and community groups. The Kings’ offer was conditional on the library finding the remaining money.
Rather than covering the entire project themselves, the couple committed $3 million if the institution could raise another $6 million. The arrangement made the donation a catalyst for a broader campaign, with the library needing to demonstrate that the community and other funders would support the plan.
How the library met its $9 million target
The fundraising effort brought together public funding and private contributions. Bangor voters approved a $3 million bond in June 2013.
The Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation pledged $3 million, while the library worked to raise the final $3 million from businesses, foundations and individual donors. In July 2014, the Bangor Daily News reported that the library had met its $9 million fundraising goal. The achievement marked an important turning point: the project could proceed with the money required for the planned work, rather than relying on the Kings’ contribution alone. The Kings’ involvement also reflected an established relationship with the institution. They had donated $2.5 million towards a new library wing in the 1990s. According to the Guardian, they had also paid to replace the library’s front marble steps several years before the 2013 pledge because the worn steps had become dangerous. For King, the library was more than a local building. In a note to his short story 'The Library Policeman', he recalled that a public library had allowed him to read widely as a child from a family with limited means.
The experience helps explain why the institution held personal significance for the author, whose novels include 'Carrie', 'The Shining' and 'It'.
From structural repairs to modern facilities
By August 2016, the renovation had become a $9.6 million modernisation effort. Bangor Daily News reported that the work was nearing completion after several years of construction and disruption to library operations. The changes went beyond repairing the leaking roof. Plans included a glass atrium intended to accommodate a lounge and café, along with a business centre where people could rent workspace by the day, week or month.
The children’s wing was moved to the third floor as part of efforts to improve safety. The project sought to preserve the library’s historic role while adapting its spaces for contemporary use. Roof repairs addressed the immediate infrastructure problem, while the redesigned areas offered additional ways for residents to work, read and gather.Construction required temporary disruption, including a partial closure during November and December while some of the most intensive work took place.
In August 2016, officials expected the remaining work to finish by the end of September, with a formal dedication planned for the following January.
A long-standing connection to Maine
The library pledge was part of a broader pattern of support for the community where the Kings have lived. The Guardian reported in 2013 that King had also contributed to fuel assistance for low-income Maine residents through a local radio fundraiser. He described Bangor as a working-class town and said he and Tabitha were continually looking for ways to help. The library project demonstrates how a conditional philanthropic gift can bring other sources of funding into a community initiative. The Kings’ $3 million commitment did not cover the entire renovation, but it helped establish a fundraising framework that combined a municipal bond, private philanthropy and contributions from other donors.
