On October 12, 1944, the Nazi flag was lowered from the Acropolis as German occupation forces withdrew from Athens, bringing an end to one of the darkest chapters in the Greek capital’s history.
After 1,264 days of occupation, Athens was free. Greek flags filled the streets, church bells rang and thousands of Athenians poured into the city centre to celebrate the departure of the occupying forces.
For a population that had endured executions, repression, hunger and devastating hardship, liberation marked a moment of profound relief and national pride.
The Nazi Flag Comes Down from the Acropolis
On the morning of October 12, 1944, German forces began their final withdrawal from the Greek capital. The Nazi swastika flag was lowered from the Acropolis, ending the occupation’s most visible symbol above Athens.
German military vehicles moved out of the city as the occupying forces retreated north. Germany’s military position was deteriorating as Allied forces advanced across Europe and the Balkans.
The moment was historic. The Acropolis, a symbol of Greek civilisation and national identity, would once again fly the Greek flag.
The end of the occupation could not erase the suffering of the preceding years, but it marked the return of freedom to a city that had endured extraordinary hardship.
Athens Erupts in Celebration
News of the German withdrawal spread rapidly, bringing people from neighbourhoods across Athens into the streets.
Crowds waved Greek flags, embraced one another and celebrated the end of Nazi rule. The atmosphere was one of joy, relief and remembrance as the capital emerged from years of military occupation.
Yet behind the celebrations lay the memory of a devastating period. Greece had suffered mass executions, reprisals, destruction and widespread hunger under Axis occupation. The famine of 1941 and 1942 killed tens of thousands, while Nazi atrocities and the persecution and deportation of Greek Jews left deep scars across the country.
For many Athenians, liberation was not simply the departure of foreign troops. It marked the end of a period when everyday survival became a struggle and resistance carried enormous risks.
The celebrations also honoured those who had fought the occupation, including members of resistance organisations and ordinary Greeks who supported the struggle for freedom.
The Greek Resistance and the Road to Freedom
Throughout the occupation, Greek resistance groups challenged German, Italian and Bulgarian forces across the country. Their activities included sabotage, intelligence gathering, armed operations and efforts to sustain resistance under brutal conditions.
The National Liberation Front (EAM) and its military wing, ELAS, became major forces in the resistance. Other organisations also participated in the struggle against the occupiers.
As German forces prepared to leave Athens, the threat of further destruction remained a serious concern. Retreating troops damaged infrastructure and sought to deny resources to their opponents.
At Keratsini, Greek resistance fighters and workers helped prevent the destruction of the power station supplying electricity to Athens and Piraeus. Their efforts helped protect critical infrastructure as the occupation ended.
The liberation was not simply the result of German withdrawal. It followed years of resistance and sacrifice, alongside the wider Allied campaign that forced Nazi Germany into retreat.
Liberation Did Not Bring Lasting Peace
Although October 12 was a day of celebration, Greece was entering another period of intense political uncertainty.
The country was deeply divided over its postwar future, the composition of its government and the role of resistance organisations. Disputes over disarmament and political power soon escalated into armed confrontation.
In December 1944, fighting erupted in Athens between British-backed government forces and communist-led EAM-ELAS forces. Known as the Dekemvriana, the clashes marked a violent turning point in the struggle over Greece’s future.
The conflict was followed by the Greek Civil War, fought from 1946 to 1949, which brought further death, displacement and division.
The joy of liberation was real, but it did not resolve the political tensions that had developed during the occupation. Instead, Greece entered a new and deeply turbulent chapter of its modern history.
October 12: A Day of Remembrance for Greece
While Greece celebrates OXI Day on October 28 to commemorate the rejection of Benito Mussolini’s ultimatum in 1940, October 12 holds a distinct place in Athens’ history.
It marks the day the capital was liberated from Nazi occupation and honours those who endured the occupation, resisted the occupiers and sacrificed their lives for freedom.
The anniversary is commemorated in Athens through ceremonies and historical events that remember the resistance and the suffering of the Greek people during the war.
October 12, 1944, remains a powerful reminder of the price of freedom and the resilience of the Greek people in the face of tyranny.
The lowering of the Nazi flag from the Acropolis was more than the end of an occupation. It was a moment when Athens reclaimed its freedom after years of suffering, resistance and sacrifice.
