The Lions Club of Sunningdale has donated 10 wheelchairs, kitchenware and associated cleaning products at University Teaching Adult Hospital (UTH) Emergency Ward.
Speaking at the handover, UTH Senior Medical Superintendent, Charles Mbewe welcomed the Club’s gesture expressing that it will improve access to emergency care by providing mobility to patients that are unable to move.
Dr Mbewe said the donation demonstrates the vital role that service organisations play in supporting and complementing government efforts to enhance healthcare delivery.
“We are particularly encouraged by the Lions Club’s commitment to serving communities and supporting those in need,” he said.
Dr Mbewe further pledged to put the donations to good use by meeting the needs of patients who depend on the services offered at the emergency department.
Meanwhile, Lions Club President, Jonathan Maliki stated that the club responded to the needs of the hospital as it understands that a wheelchair can make a difference.
“From our visits we have observed a serious shortage of equipment and supplies and decided to extend this gesture,” he said.
Mr Maliki stated that the donation will make a difference because without enough functional wheelchairs, patient’s lives are endangered.
