The death toll from a bus crash at the entrance to Tagounite commune in Morocco’s Zagora province rose to five on Wednesday after another passenger, who had been critically injured, died, according to local sources.
The bus was operating on the route between Marrakech and M’Hamid El Ghizlane in Zagora province and was carrying 26 passengers when it overturned near Tagounite early Wednesday. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation, Hespress sources said.
The initial toll stood at four dead, but rose to five after critically injured passengers were transferred to the provincial hospital in Zagora. Several injured passengers remain in intensive care, while medical teams are providing treatment to the wounded, according to the sources.
The death toll could rise further given the serious condition of several injured passengers. Provincial authorities are monitoring the victims’ condition and have instructed medical teams to provide the necessary care.
Local authorities and Royal Gendarmerie officers remain at the scene as an investigation proceeds under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office. Investigators are seeking to determine the cause of the crash, including whether it involved excessive speed, a technical failure or human error.
In a statement, the King’s Prosecutor at the Zagora Court of First Instance said the accident occurred at around 6 a.m. when a bus traveling from Marrakech toward M’Hamid El Ghizlane overturned with 26 passengers on board.
The public prosecutor’s office ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the crash, along with continued monitoring of the injured passengers’ health and measures to facilitate the burial of the victims.
The statement added that legal action would be determined in light of the investigation’s findings.
