A Soweto teacher accused of raping a pupil has handed himself over to police and is expected to make a first appearance in court on Thursday.
The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed that the teacher will appear in the Pretoria Magistrates' Court facing a charge of rape.
The teacher is accused of sexually assaulting a Grade 4 learner at Busisiwe Primary School in Soweto.
The Department, in an earlier statement, said the teacher has been placed on precautionary suspension pending the finalisation of a disciplinary hearing.
Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lebogang Maile, is expected to appear in court.
The Department said he also visited the school where he appealed to parents, learners and the surrounding community to remain calm and allow law enforcement authorities and departmental procedures to take their course.
