The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has described the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, as a role model to traditional rulers across Nigeria.
The Sultan spoke on Saturday at a royal Durbar in Benin City, organised to mark the 10th anniversary of the monarch’s coronation.
Represented by the Emir of Kagara, Niger state, Malam Ahmed Garba Gunna, the Sultan commended Oba Ewuare II’s leadership and influence among traditional institutions.
“We are following in your footsteps while praying for grace and courage,” he said.
The Durbar featured the Benin monarch riding on horseback from his palace to Garrick Memorial Ground, where he led a large gathering in a royal horse race.
Once a rare spectacle in Benin, the Durbar has become a recurring feature since Oba Ewuare II ascended the throne a decade ago.
Other traditional rulers who paid homage included the Imah IV of Somorika Kingdom, HRH Sule Idaiye, and the Ojie of Uneme N’Ekehuan, HRH Oba Felix Collins, both from Akoko-Edo local government area of Edo state.
Speaking on behalf of the Benin Traditional Council, its Secretary, Frank Irabor, thanked the visiting monarchs and other dignitaries for attending the celebration.
He also commended the University of Benin Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, and a team of veterinary doctors led by the director of the university’s veterinary clinic, Prof. Paul Paul Nwiyi Okechukwu, for ensuring the health and welfare of the horses and riders ahead of the event.
The Durbar showcased the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom and brought traditional rulers together to celebrate Oba Ewuare II’s decade on the throne.
