By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): An Orange Walk Town store manager says he was tricked out of $4,000 in a money exchange scam.
The 38 year old manager of a store on Otro Benque Road told police that around 12:50pm on Tuesday, October 20, a tall, dark skinned man wearing a blue hat, brown shirt and black long pants approached him and asked if he wanted to exchange Belize dollars for US dollars.
The manager said he needed US$2,000. He counted out about $4,000 in Belize currency in front of the man, who in turn handed over US$2,000. The manager counted it, confirmed it was correct and placed it in a black bag.
According to the report, the man then took a phone call and began making excuses to call off the exchange. While the manager was not paying attention, the man allegedly switched the bag and left the store.
When the manager checked the bag on his break around 2:30pm, he found only 25 US one dollar bills, worth about $50 in Belize currency.
He reported the matter to police for future reference.
