Assam: Thirteen people were arrested on Sunday in connection with the assault on a Bihu troupe in Sribhumi, Assam, after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the attack and directed the state police chief to act against those responsible.
Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) said a case had been registered at Sribhumi Police Station and that the 13 arrested persons had been produced before a court. Police are also trying to identify and trace others allegedly involved. “As directed, a case has been registered at Sribhumi PS,” the DGP wrote on social media.

Sarma reacted on Sunday, October 25, after videos of the assault spread on social media and triggered demands for action. He said an attack on Bihu performers would not be tolerated. “Bihu is the soul of Assam, our pride and our identity. We will never tolerate any insult to our culture and heritage,” the chief minister wrote in a post on social media.
The troupe was allegedly attacked on Saturday night, October 24, during a Durga Puja idol immersion procession organised by Hindustan Club in Sribhumi town, where its members had been invited to perform. Clips circulating online show injured performers, and some footage appears to show bamboo sticks being used in the confrontation. What triggered the violence remains unclear.
Early accounts suggested that the dispute may have stemmed from objections to Assamese songs being played in the Barak Valley, and there were allegations that traditional Bihu instruments were damaged. Neither claim has been independently verified, and the exact sequence of events is yet to be established.
Investigators are now looking into how the confrontation began and what role each of the accused played. Details about the injured performers and the specific charges invoked were not immediately available.
