The Lucas Oil Stadium roof and north end zone window will be open Sunday, Oct. 18, when the Indianapolis Colts host the Tennessee Titans.
Sunny skies and highs in the lows 60s are forecast for Indianapolis.
The Colts have played 31 times with the window and roof open, compiling an 18-13 record. The roof has been open 42 times in the 148 games played at Lucas Oil Stadium, 28.4% of the games.
The roof was closed for the season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, a 41-23 loss. The roof and window were open for the 19-17 victory over the Houston Texans in Week 3 this season.
There have been complaints over the years about the Colts not opening to roof enough but the game against the Texans had people talking about the sun and shadows on the field. Former Colts cornerback Darius Butler posted on X that it made "for a terrible TV product."
Fans sitting on the home side posted photos of poor field visibility. TV viewers said the ball was getting lost in the shadows and impossible to track. Some even questioned the architecture and design of the stadium, which opened with a retractable roof in 2008.
Indianapolis Colts chief operating officer Pete Ward noted the team can't win with the roof but said there's no design flaw with the stadium.
"If you go to Arrowhead Stadium, late afternoon, the shadows creep onto the field. Texas Stadium was famous for its shadows. It's almost like an American sports tradition," Ward says. "And it doesn't mean there's a design flaw, because almost every stadium is going to have a shadow, depending on the time of day."
