SA20 Cricket Opens in Gqeberha on Sunday 17 January

SOUTH AFRICA · CRICKET

SA20 cricket returns on Sunday 17 January 2027, when champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape host Pretoria Capitals in Gqeberha. The month-long Twenty20 league ends with a final at Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday 21 February.

Tickets go on public sale on Thursday 5 November 2026, after a pre-sale that opened on Tuesday 20 October. Limited R50 (about US$3) tickets are part of the offer.

What SA20 Cricket Is and Why It Matters

SA20 cricket is South Africa’s franchise Twenty20 league, with six teams backed by owners who also run Indian Premier League sides. Its first ball was bowled at a sold-out Newlands on Tuesday 10 January 2023.

The league says SA20 cricket has sold more than 1.6 million tickets and drawn over 500 million television viewers since 2023. Sunrisers Eastern Cape have won three titles, in 2023, 2024 and 2026, while MI Cape Town took the 2025 crown.

Australia’s Mitchell Marsh joins the Sunrisers, and England’s Joe Root returns to the Paarl Royals. Sam Curran and Jos Buttler play for Durban’s Super Giants, while Phil Salt returns to the Pretoria Capitals.

The South African core includes Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, David Miller and Temba Bavuma, who now plays for the Capitals. Veteran Faf du Plessis, 42, was bought by Joburg Super Kings at the 7 October auction for R2.7 million (about US$165,000).

SA20 pointed to the United States when Joburg Super Kings signed Andries Gous, alongside Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani. For American fans, the league is also a window on the stars of the Indian Premier League and English county cricket.

Schedule and Key Dates in US Eastern Time

The SA20 cricket opener starts at 15:30 South African time, which is 8:30 a.m. in New York. South Africa keeps the same clock all year, so it is seven hours ahead of New York in January and February.

Weekday games start at 17:30 (10:30 a.m. Eastern), and Sunday games start at 15:30 (8:30 a.m. Eastern). Four Saturday double-headers, on 23 and 30 January and 6 and 13 February, add a 13:00 game (6:00 a.m. Eastern).

Thirty league matches run until Sunday 14 February across Gqeberha, Durban, Paarl, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Centurion. The top four teams then reach the playoffs.

Qualifier 1 is on Tuesday 16 February at Boland Park in Paarl. The Eliminator follows on Wednesday 17 February, and Qualifier 2 on Friday 19 February, both at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.

The final is on Sunday 21 February at Newlands in Cape Town, with a 15:30 start (8:30 a.m. Eastern). Only the final has a reserve day.

A match needs five overs bowled to the side batting second to count. If it ends with no result, the teams share the points and the game is not replayed.

Tickets, Prices and How to Buy

Fever is the official ticketing partner, and SA20 cricket tickets are sold through the league’s website at sa20.co.za. The pre-sale runs from Tuesday 20 October to Wednesday 4 November, and public sale opens on Thursday 5 November 2026.

Fans can register for the pre-sale in advance, and playoff and final tickets are included in it. Online orders work from outside South Africa, while stadium ticket offices sell tickets from Sunday 15 November.

SA20 cricket has no single price list, because prices vary by venue and by weekday or weekend. Each match page lists scholar (ages 2 to 17), adult (18 to 59) and pensioner (60 and over) prices.

Limited R50 (about US$3) Frenzy tickets are offered in the pre-sale for each team’s first home game, playoffs and final. A smaller batch follows in public sale from 5 November for openers, select group games, playoffs and the final.

Buyers may take up to 16 tickets per match in the league and playoffs, and 10 for the final. Tickets are digital and linked to an SA20 account, and the entry code is released on Tuesday 1 December 2026.

SA20 warns that resellers have no official access to tickets, so buy only at sa20.co.za or at the stadium offices. Groups of more than 16 must email the stadium ticket office.

If a match is cancelled, general-access buyers are refunded, and Fever emails the next steps automatically. If five or more overs are bowled, no refund is issued.

The Stadiums and Getting Around

SA20 cricket opens at St George’s Park in central Gqeberha, which was called Port Elizabeth until 2021. South Africa’s Department of Sport, Arts and Culture announced the new name on Thursday 25 February 2021.

SA20 calls it South Africa’s oldest international cricket ground, founded in 1882. It was also the first Test ground in the world to run an LED floodlight system, SA20 says.

The home fans, known as the Orange Army, bring a brass band to the Old Stand. Families can choose the grass embankment under the scoreboard, where children set up mini games.

The final is at Newlands, in the southern suburbs of Cape Town, with Table Mountain behind the ground and trains passing beside it. SA20 points students to the grass Oaks embankment on the eastern side.

The Wanderers in Johannesburg, nicknamed the Bullring, hosts the Eliminator and Qualifier 2 and holds over 25,000 people. Its gates are on Corlett Drive or beside the adjoining rugby fields.

Gates open three hours before the first ball, and the toss is 30 minutes before play. Children can play on the field in the first hour after gates open, weather permitting.

Each stadium has its own list of banned items, which SA20 publishes as a PDF for every ground. Parking and access details will be added closer to the season.

How to Watch SA20 Cricket in the United States

SA20 cricket has Willow by Cricbuzz as its broadcaster for North America. More broadcasters will be confirmed in late 2026, so the full US line-up is not final.

A 13:00 Saturday game begins at 6:00 a.m. Eastern, while 17:30 games begin at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. Viewers on the US West Coast take off three more hours, so the opener starts at 5:30 a.m. in Los Angeles.

SuperSport covers sub-Saharan Africa, Sky Sports covers the United Kingdom and Fox Sports covers Australia, while JioStar covers India. Fans who travel to South Africa can also watch in the stadium, which SA20 calls the best way to feel the league.

Tips for US and Foreign Visitors

US citizens need no visa for stays under 90 days, according to South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs and the State Department. Passports must be valid for 30 days after departure and show two blank visa pages.

A yellow fever certificate is needed only if you arrive from a country the World Health Organization designates, the State Department says. Check the latest rules before you fly.

The State Department rates South Africa at Level 2, exercise increased caution, citing crime, terrorism, unrest and kidnapping. Violent crime is more common downtown, especially after dark, so avoid walking alone at night.

For Johannesburg, the department says crime victims have been followed from the airport and robbed at their home or hotel. Book rides in advance and keep valuables out of sight.

Matches are spread over six cities, so a multi-venue trip needs domestic flights or long drives. Book a Cape Town bed early for the final, because SA20 says its first three finals sold out in record time.

January and February are South African summer, so bring sun protection and a rain layer. Dollar figures here use 16.40 rand per US dollar, the rate on Wednesday 21 October 2026.

Fans of SA20 cricket planning a longer trip can add the South Africa v England Test at Centurion. That Test starts on Saturday 26 December, so a trip can combine both.

What Is Not Confirmed Yet

SA20 cricket has not published a full price list on its general ticket page. The R50 (about US$3) Frenzy tickets are the only price confirmed.

Beyond Willow by Cricbuzz, no further North American broadcasters are named yet, and the subscription price is not confirmed. SA20 says more broadcasters will follow in late 2026.

In SA20 cricket, the playoff and final teams are listed as to be confirmed, because the league table decides them. The league has not said when hospitality packages for the playoffs and final go on sale.

Parking and access details for each ground are still to come. Weather could also shift a game, since only the final has a reserve day.
