Oman – A ship off the coast of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an “unidentified projectile” on Wednesday, causing a fire that was subsequently extinguished, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
UKMTO stated that the ship, which was hit 11 nautical miles (approximately 20 kilometers) west of the coastal city of Bukha, “is currently at anchor and all crew members are safe. There are no reports of environmental damage so far.”
The Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil passed before the outbreak of war in late February, is at the heart of tensions between Tehran and Washington.
Tehran insists on controlling shipping in the strait and targets vessels attempting to transit it without its permission. In response, Washington maintains a blockade on Iranian ports.
Attacks on ships attempting to pass through the waterway have increased in recent days, as Washington seeks to escort more vessels through it.
On Tuesday, Iran issued new threats to oil companies, warning of retaliatory attacks "if Washington continues its provocations."
